Rendering of the Greek Imperfect in the Old-Bulgarian Translation of the 13 Sermons by St. Gregory the Theologian According to an 11th Century Manuscript

Summary/Abstract: A comparison is made in this article between the use of the Imperfect in the Greek text of the 13 sermons by St. Gregory the Theologian and its grammatical correspondences in the Old-Bulgarian translation. The goal is to explain some problems of the translation, resulting from the difference between the temporal-aspectual oppositions in the verb systems of the two languages, to determine to what extent the translator follows the rules of the Slavic literature or is influenced by the original. From that analysis we can draw the following conclusion: the semantics of the Greek and the Old-Bulgarian Imperfect is not the same. The Greek Imperfect, as part of a verb system with priority of aspectual oppositions in it, is covered by the term Inorective. In the Old-Bulgarian language the Imperfect is a tense of the relative temporal system and denotes simultaneousness in the past.
