Summary/Abstract: he Romanian press during post-communist transition to democracy has been affected by a lack of axiological landmarks and specialized human resources, and confusion, but there was also a strong desire to overcome these major limitations. After 1990, there has been a dramatic growth in the Romanian mass-media (the number of new publications has increased), media has diversified and, eventually, came out of state control, despite the largely unchanged mentality of the Romanians who lived in totalitarianism. The recent history of press shows us the kind of dilemmas and obstacles journalism has had to overcome in a country emerging from communism.
