Summary/Abstract: The intensive course German as a Foreign Language at the Department for Protestant Theology, “Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu/Hermannstadt” has celebrated in September 2016 its 20th jubilee. It has started in September 1995 at the former Faculty of Protestant Theology in Hermannstadt as a Language College of the Lutheran World Federation and was meant to offer support to scholarship holders of the Church Development Service of the German Protestant Churches “Bread for the World”. The participants come from Romania as well as from other Eastern-European countries; most of the Romanian students are graduates of Orthodox Theology, whereas the foreigners have either an orthodox background, or they belong to Lutheran or other Reformed Churches. The intensive German language course enables them to begin an academic study program in Germany but it also promotes, apart from the intercultural oriented acquisition of language, the self-understanding of the students as well as a deep understanding of otherness, their awareness and vocation for ecumenical Christianity.
