Summary/Abstract: This study deals with prescriptive norms applied to the national accreditation exams for sworn translator candidates in Poland. The study has been limited to norms for specialized terminology and phraseology in the Polish to French translations of economic texts. As these prescriptive norms have not been formulated explicitly, the study relies on the benchmarks which are used to evaluate the examination papers. The purpose of this article is to check the assumption that the examiners evaluate the papers without any clear benchmarks, and that the candidates attend the exam without knowing precisely on what basis they will be evaluated. This hypothesis is confirmed by an analysis of authentic examination papers which concentrates on the way the examiners apply the benchmark of the “terminology and phraseology of the specialized sublanguage”.
