Summary/Abstract: In the 19. century writing narratives are related to extratextual reality, in the way that fiction is legitimized by that reality-the truth. These narrative procedures, even when the text undoubtedly belonged to the national romanticist tradition, were seen as protorealist. Relying on Auerbach's "Mimesis" and Hayden White's subsequent theories, as well as field theory by P. Bourdieu, I attempt to argue that the referentiality in short stories of Janko Jurkovic, Dragojla Jarnevic, Ivan Perkovac and August Senoa is the result of the autonomisation of the fictional field.
