Summary/Abstract: Universities need to be entrepreneurial. In the practice they need to skilfully combine the social mission and private academic entrepreneurship.The aim of this study is to formulate and highlight the thesis on reasonability and capability of applying such attitudes and pursuing such activities in the practical operation of institutions of higher education that reflect the idea of the entrepreneurial university. We present a collection of our assessments and reflections based on active observation of the issues in question relying on: literature review, own empirical research on entrepreneurship of universities, experience gained while participating in processes involved in managing a Polish institution of higher education, and contacts within the academia. Weaknesses of the Polish universities include: insufficient development of relations with the environment (in particular, with employers and alumni), low level of internationalization, lack of innovative education solutions (especially individual oriented),small role of marketing in the university activities, the limitations and the low diversification of funding sources, not always professional management. To eliminate these barriers may open the way to entrepreneurship of Polish universities.
