Summary/Abstract: The article addresses the concept of asset-based welfare which is a growing research area focused on the role of household estate in old-age security. The paper begins with a general background on the concept of asset-based welfare with particular reference to housing wealth. The author discusses its main features, according to which the individual accumulation of wealth can be a viable alternative to the public system of social policy, especially with regard to old age income support. In the second part, he uses this concept to assess social policy in Poland. Special attention is given to the changes in the tenure structure of the housing system in Poland that resulted from transition to the market economy. The author also emphasizes main limitations of the concept of asset based-welfare and its potential distributional consequences.
