Summary/Abstract: Ongoing debates on whether we need economic diplomats in the most important world economic centers point to the fact that in our country, unfortunately, the real role and importance of economic diplomacy for economic recovery and appearance of our economy in the world has not been fully understood yet. Long time ago developed states understood that economic diplomacy contributed a lot to promotion of their economies as well and also to protection of their national economic interests. Having in mind that the Ministry of Economic and Regional Development have opened a contest fro first twenty eight economic diplomats of Serbia in the world centers, a question arises: what kind of experts do we need for these positions? What are the qualities that a modern economic diplomat should have? Which criteria should be met when choosing those experts? Is it possible to objectively measure their real contribution? What are the experiences of other developed countries in the field?
