Summary/Abstract: The 19th century was a time of cultural changes and technical inventions. For mankind, getting a better public and private lighting system was a favorable field to explore. The invention of gas and oil lighting, and, later, electricity were some of the most important changes in the human comfort and quality of life.Even if at the end of the century electrical lighting was introduced first at the Royal Court in Bucharest, then in the capital and in Iași, candlesticks, candelabra (table candlesticks with branches) and chambersticks still remained popular as decorative items. In the 19th century silver lighting items were produced in a large range of historical styles, mainly as a result of developments in mechanized production. Almost any form or any type of ornament, peculiar to the previous centuries, was imitated with high fidelity, owing to the new technology.
