Summary/Abstract: Carol Pop de Szathmari was born in 1812 at Cluj, in a middle class family. Since young he showed a lot of qualities in painting, calligraphy and music. Later he travelled abroad for studies in some important art academies. Back in the country he became official painter at the royal court, kings like Alexandru Dimitrie Ghica, George Bibescu, Barbu Ştirbei, Alexandru Ioan Cuza and Carol I used his services. He made a lot of drawings and paintings with scenes from daily life like Romanian peasants, local musicians or different portraits; not only from Romania but also from other countries he travelled. But one of the most important activities it was the one as photographer. Carol Pop de Szathmari was one of the few who adopted this technique soon as it was discovered. In April 1854 he went at Crimeea war (1853-1856) where he took pictures form the battle scene, which made him the first war photographer form the world. He died in 1887 but his workshop from Bucharest continued to run till the First World War when it was destroy during a bombing.
