Summary/Abstract: The warfare caused mass displacements and exiles from Galicia which concerned Ukrainians, Poles and Jews. On the turn of the years 1914/1915 on the area of Austria and Czech Republic there arrived approximately one million people who had been displaced from Eastern Galicia. The Austrian authorities were not prepared for accommodating so many people from the areas involved the war. The Ukrainians as well as the other nationalities were accommodated mainly in Gmünd, Grödig, Wolfberg and ChoceĔ. The conditions of human existence there were really difficult. At the camp in Gmünd 30 hundreds of people were accommodated at the same time. Among the refugees were also children and youths at the school age. There were opened junior high schools in Vienna, Praha and Gmünd. Moreover in Vienna and Praha seminaries for teachers were created.
