Functional Transformations of Post-Industrial Areas

Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with functional transformations in post-industrial areas which have been developed in a variety of ways, taking into account their potential, especially architectural potential. Industry in these areas has been replaced with new functions related to trade, services, office space, entertainment, culture, recreation and housing. The paper includes the more interesting examples of revitalisations performed in post-industrial areas in Poland along with directions for revitalisation of the selected post-factory area in the small Lower Silesian town of Lubań. Providing an area with a new function according to the expectations of the local community often serves as a key feature of its identity, and creates new perspectives for its functioning and development.
