Summary/Abstract: The article aims to show the role of smart specialisations, the potentials arising from the intrinsic qualities and assets of the region, in the implementation of a policy based on the sustainable development paradigm. Identifying smart specialisations by every region is one of the ex-ante conditionalities for receiving support from the European Regional Development Fund in the future perspective. In order to determine these specialisations in the Opolskie Voivodeship a model for identification of region’s development specialisations, including smart specialisations, was developed. According to this methodology, smart specialisations occurring in the region are such changes in technologies and/or their products, which meet simultaneously three conditions, under which they are or become: the object of research in the regional R&D sector (institutes, laboratories, higher education entities located in a region); the subject of pilot implementation projects in the enterprises located in a region; the subject of sale and purchase transactions in the regional and/ or supraregional market. On the basis of these premises both the existing and the potential smart specialisations in the region have been defined.
