The underground galleries of the wine complexes from the Republic of Moldova. Architectural and artistic valences

Summary/Abstract: The underground galleries from the Republic of Moldova, left after the excavation of limestone, have become useful by organizing the interior space, suitable for the production, storage and exhibition of wines. These underground labyrinths, subjected to necessary changes for the assignment of new functions during the 1950s – 1990s of the XX century and of the first decade of the XXI century, are a true temptation not only because they host remarkable wine collections but also through the authenticity of their realization as architectural object. The tunnel networks from Cricova, Milestii Mici, Branesti and Ciorescu constitute spatial complexes that impress by enormous dimensions and aesthetic valences of the surrounding environment. Their initial aspect, generated by the machines and technical equipment used for excavation, was generally maintained. Based on the existing structure, new concepts, related to their transformation into public spaces, were implemented in the architecture of the underground galleries. The first accomplishments were the tasting rooms in Cricova, followed by the integration of tasting rooms in other wine complexes as well. The current architectural solution reveals the centrality of the position occupied by creativity in the formation of new spaces, whose architecture redefines its power of attraction based on a cultural and artistic presence.
