Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this study is to review the applicability of DEA as a tool supporting management of tourism regions. The theorethical and practical aspects of the mothod have been dissussed and ilustrated by an exemplary employment of DEA. It concerned NUTS 2 territorial units located at the southern coast of the Baltic and North Seas. The output was measured by the number of nights spent in tourism accommodation and inputs by the number of persons employed in accommodation and food service activities, capacity of tourism accommodation and gross fixed capital formation in accommodation and food service activities, trade, arts, recreation, other household services and extra-territorial organizations. The application of DEA enabled to construct a ranking of the regions according to effectiveness indicator, to present its potential as benchmarking technique and in broader context as a tool supporting regional development.
