Summary/Abstract: Despite various measures taken to improve the standards of health and safety at work initiated in the European Union, the level of safety in Polish organizations has not significantly improved. An obstacle to achieve success seems to be the traditional approach to health and safety that is based in the majority of Polish enterprises on the philosophy of humanitarianism. The experiences of developed countries show that much more effective is to follow the road of economic efficiency in the area of occupational health and safety (cost-benefit analysis). The aim of the paper is to diagnose the level of awareness and actions taken by employers regarding costs management incurred for safety. The study was conducted in a group of62 employers, using a questionnaire survey. The results indicate that entrepreneurs do not have sufficient knowledge about the functioning economic stimulants of safety. Thus, they do not make cost analyzes, and investments in safety are rather the result of legal obligations than beliefs in the profitability of these investments.
