Summary/Abstract: SWOT analysis on the metropolitan area of Pitesti. Located at the contact between the Pitesti High Plain and the Getic Table Land the city of Pitesti developed as a market town because of its position at a crossroad of commercial roads and with time the city developed industrially and spatially. Since 2008 there were discussions between the representatives of local administrations from Pitesti and the surrounding settlements concerning the creation of Pitesti Metropolitan Area. The primary objective for creating the area is an easier way of accessing European funds. In order to create a metropolitan area there are several principles of which two are more important: the ration between the area and the number of people which inhabit it and the relation between the city (pole of attraction) and the adjacent settlements. The main analysis method is the SWOT which highlights four elements: advantages, disadvantages, opportunities and threats of the possible metropolitan area. The creation of the area is in a project phase and until now two steps in organizing the zone are distinguishable: in the first step seven settlements joined Pitesti city and in the second step another two. It remains to be seen if this area will be created and which settlements will be part of it.
