Political Participation in Local Rural Self-government

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to present the main forms and levels of political participationin local rural self-government. The analyzes concern on the involvement of inhabitants of rural communes in the activities connected with the electoral sphere. The results of the survey on 700 inhabitants of the village refer to: 1) participation in municipal elections, 2) participation in the elections of village heads and village councilors, 3) participation in meetings with candidates for councilors or commune heads, 4) election campaigning for a particular candidate or political groups and 5) participation in work for the election campaign of a particular candidate. In addition, a synthetic indicator of political participation was constructed. It shows the level of this phenomenon in the studied rural communities. The results clearly confirm the thesis of the low propensity of rural people in Poland in local political participation.
