Summary/Abstract: According to the specialized literature, the Mötschwil type fibula is the dominant type of fibula on the territory of present-day Switzerland in the LT C2 phase. The type was formed in a specific geographical environment in the vicinity of Berne, and subsequently spread over a larger area. Research has readily used the term "Mötschwil horizon" for the division of the Middle La Tene period from other regions, the comparison of regional chronologies and the dating of oppida. This led in some cases to confusion in the evaluation of archaeological material: in particular, fibulae that do not even look like the eponymous type have been dated according to the Swiss chronology.
