Summary/Abstract: The German philosophers Karl-Otto Apel and Jurgen Habermas have made their mark on contemporary philosophy, and in particular contemporary ethical theory. Their analysts and critics unequivocally draw attention to the contribution these philosophers have made to the establishment and development of an ethics of communication. In essence, this is the attempt to define contemporary communities as communication communities. The “transformation of philosophy”, or its transition to a “paradigm of communication”, is thus a necessity. In the process, the earlier achievements of philosophy should be respected, for they should serve as the basis for a new ethics (the ethics of the era of knowledge). This paper analyses the central positions occupied by the philosophy of Apel and Habermas in which, on the one hand, they set out in clear, well-argued manner the need to introduce a new ethics and, on the other, they emphasize its principles, basing them on the modern need for communication or, more accurately, the need for the articulation of ethical principles within a communication community. The paper sets out in elementary fashion a theory of communication communities (Apel) and a theory of communicative competence (Habermas) for the purpose of expounding the importance of establishing and developing an ethics of journalism, given the need to promote responsibility, particularly in the domain of communication within a community.
