Summary/Abstract: Current philosophy and theory in general warn of the need for ethics. The modern world, therefore, is not moral; and nor is science. Although science made the modern and post-modern world powerful, it was unable to prevent itself from being misused. Anti-humanism and destruction, violence and terror of all kinds are our everyday reality. It is worth, therefore, once again drawing attention to the need for ethics, its meaning and its force. This paper sets out the philosophical (and theological) conceptual and categorical, that is to say the elementary moments essential to an understand of ethics as such as well as the need for ethics today. Ethics, morals, morality, good and evil, the doctrine of the good, justice and freedom – these are just some of the issues addressed. In this regard, Kant’s doctrine of ethics cannot be overlooked, and is accorded particular attention. Since the paper is part of a more comprehensive work, the understanding of Kant’s ethics is set out in academic fashion to serve for a further analysis of the role of ethics in resolving the unresolved issues of the modern world.
