Barriers of development of bitcoin as a new form of international money

Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to the subject of bitcoin, a precursor among cryptocurrencies and still the most important of them. There are a number of barriers towards its wider and wider use as a new form of international money. The aim of the study is to identify and to characterize the most significant of them: the stabilisation of the exchange rate, the appropriate scope and quality of regulation at the state and international level, the increase of the degree of the system security and the necessity of spreading of the bitcoin in the economic turnover. The characteristics of this cryptocurrency were also presented against the background of its fulfilment of international money functions, and suggestions for the directions of solving problems appearing in this context were indicated. As a research method, the analysis of literature and statistical data – mainly from the period of 2016-2017 – was used.
