Summary/Abstract: This article discusses the different perspectives to the concept of programming. It tracks the historical development of conceptions of what constitutes the programming process. There are pointed non-traditional activities, which may also be defined as programming. The article also explains why it is difficult to give a precise definition of this concept. The impact of programming paradigms over the programming process and their significance to the training of computer science students are analyzed
