Summary/Abstract: Higher education institutions have been involved in the creation of knowledge, its dissemination and transfer since the beginning of its existence. Their task is to equip new generations of students with the knowledge, abilities and skills needed for personal contribution to the society in which they live. In this discourse, main challenges for the present, but especially for future generations of students, are not just the reaching of academic achievements but the acquisition of knowledge and skills necessary for successful functioning in a globalized world of information and technology; actually the acquisition of knowledge, abilities, skills and habits of information literacy important for realization these achievements but also for all aspects of life. Considering existing numerous prejudices in the academic and other environments associated with the concept of information literacy, the aim of the paper is to emphasize the importance of this concept as functional literacy in the 21st century and to point out the necessity of introducing information literacy in formal curricula of all levels of education, particularly in higher education.
