SEMANTIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WORD "POLITICIAN" IN STUDENTS FROM 6™ TO 7™ SCHOOL GRADE

Summary/Abstract: The article addresses the issues of political socialization by focusing on the concept of a "politician" by adolescents. It presents results from a survey, conducted among 109 Bulgarian scholars. The research was meant to outline the preferred strategies for verbal description of the meaning of the word "politician", to explore the content of the cognitions connected with this word, and to elucidate the affective component of the concept. As shown by our survey, the participants had a sufficient amount of knowledge that enabled them at the age of 12-13 years to freely offer verbal description of the category "politician", to outline its main characteristics, and to express their personal opinion about the members of this category. The schemata-like descriptions and the preferred display of prototypes within the category are to be connected to their relative lack of experience. The analysis of the affective component of the concept brought forth the hypothesis that a great number of young people in the contemporary Bulgarian society tended to demonstrate "political cynicism".
