Summary/Abstract: The paper offer s an overview of data from recent opinion polls as well as the dominant motives and fears identified in the research on the image of refugees and migrants in Bulgaria from the last decade. The generic topics that provoke concern and negative emotions are compared with the motivation of candidate volunteers in the registration and reception centers of the State Agency for Refugees in 2016 who applied to work with people who seek protection. A total of 36 authentic texts by candidates for the position who indicated as their mother tongue Bulgarian have been analyzed. Their motifs are subjected to a thematic analysis in order to see how the predominant objects of fear in Bulgarian society are reflected in the perceptions and views of this specific, supposedly highly positive group.
