The multiplicity of strangeness i.e. elements of the “third” culture in the context of translator’s choices

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is an attempt to point difficulties which may occur in the process of transmitting culturally determined linguistic elements originating from different cultural circles than source and target culture. The discussed problems were presented on the examples from the story Dream Valley by Boris Akunin. The analyzed decisions of translator allow to show specific difficulties relating to reflection of cultural identity in the process of translation and consequences of translator’s individual choices. The translator should have multicultural competence and specific linguistic intuition.
