Summary/Abstract: The level of patent activity, considered as a measure of innovation, is different for different countries. This variation also applies to regional approaches at Union level and at national level. The aim of this article is to analyze the level, change and shape of selected determinants of innovation in the European Union as a whole as well as in selected countries taking into account regional differentiation. The analysis used data for the European Union coming from EUROSTAT. The coefficient of skewness, concentration factors (kurtosis, Herfindahl-Hirschman coefficient, Gini coefficient), Florence’s localization coefficient and distribution variation index were used. The results confirmed both the large discrepancies within the European Union of innovative activity and its determinants, as well as the strong concentration of this phenomenon (albeit decreasing) at the level of selected countries (in regional terms).
