Summary/Abstract: The concept of social competence has been defined and used in different ways within the psychological literature. The goal of this paper is a review of contemporary conceptual and theoretical issues concerning this phenomenon. Four most common approaches of social competence and specificity of applied methodology have been critically considered. In the final part of the paper, one of the potential models used for overcoming the reductionalistic definitions of the social competence has been presented. According to this model (Rose-Krasnor, 1997), social competence is defined by three principal, hierarchically structured levels of analysis.
