Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is the discussion on the issue, whether the development of philanthropy and volunteering in Polish conditions is the symptom of sustainable consumption. The article shows the importance of non-governmental organizations for society in consumers’ perception and how significant donations from individuals to NGO in Poland are. It also presents research results of various research institutions devoted to Poles involvement in philanthropic activities and volunteering. The article summarizes the considerations regarding financial support and active involvement in NGOs’activities by individuals as a symptom of sustainable consumption, defined as an alternative life-style, taking into account social effects of consumption
