Assessment of Economic Effects of Tourism in Metropolitan Cities

Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to examine the opportunity to use the information on economic impact as a tool supporting management of tourism development in metropolitan cities. To this end the three research question have been asked: what types of economic impact may be measured, what data should be available and what institutional factors affect the process. The research method comprise the literature and empirical cases review. The findings of the study suggest that there is not consistent standard concerning the approach to economic impact measurement of tourism in metropolitan cities and their outcomes are sensitive to the quality of data and method applied. As a consequence the managerial usefulness of the tourism economic impact measurement is limited and such assessments are only occasionally undertaken, mainly to support strategic decisions on city development.
