Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate both passive leisure time of young people in Lodz (internet usage, TV viewing, computer games) and trends in sedentary activities in youth over the last 15 years. The study group was school youth aged 12–19 attending primary, middle and secondary schools in 4 districts of Lodz. The study involved 622 students: 309 girls (49,7%) and 313 boys (50,3%). Sedentary activities were analyzed based on the author’s interview questionnaire modeled on the one used in the international studies (HBSC – Health Behaviour In School-aged Children). In this study, age was a differentiating factor in the frequency of TV viewing: the highest in the youngest, the lowest in the oldest, while the reverse trend was observed with using the computer: Internet, computer games – the highest in the oldest, the lowest among the youngest. As far as gender is concerned, more frequent use of computer games by boys has been found. It is particularly important for school health education to raise the awareness and knowledge of the dangers of sitting in front of TV and computer, as well as to encourage active leisure for young people and their parents.
