Increasing awareness of pregnant women about the harmful effects of tobacco smoke as an effective tool in reduction of tobacco-related disease burden

Summary/Abstract: Environmental tobacco smoke is a serious public health problem. Tobacco smoke negatively affects the health of pregnant woman and the developing fetus. The aim of the currentstudy was to assess the awareness of pregnant women of the negative impact of tobacco smoke on human health. The questionnaire study was conducted at the Provincial Specialist Hospital in Lodz. The data come from 252 pregnant women. Nearly 97% of women were aware of harmful effects of smoking and 95% of respondents believed that smoking negatively affectsthe health of her unborn child. Nearly 20% of respondents have not seen any association between smoking and the risk of myocardial infarction, nearly 42% did not agree or did not know that smoking can cause a stroke. 17% of women did not have the knowledge that smoking contributes to a lower birth weight, and 34% did not know that smoking contributes to the underdevelopment of biological fetus. The general level of knowledge about the risks related to the inhalation of tobacco smoke is quite good. Unfortunately, detailed knowledge about relationship between smoking and specific diseases is unsatisfactory. The effectiveprograms increasing the level of women's knowledge about the effects of environmental tobacco smoke on pregnancy and fetus are needed.
