Summary/Abstract: The essence of nanotechnology is the design, creation and use of materials with at least one structure dimension in the range of 1 to 100 nanometers. Innovative applications of nanotechnology can provide benefits to society but also create risks for human health. The lack of an international agreement relating to legal regulations in the field of nanotechnology that would improve international trade, is due in particular to the lack of scientific knowledge about the risk associated with the use of nanomaterials and the numerous applications of nanotechnologies in various fields; this makes it difficult to cover nanomaterials with one comprehensive legal act. Ensuring the safe use of innovative applications of nanotechnology is, in particular, served by international soft law.
