Summary/Abstract: Open innovation includes a mutual exchange of knowledge between the organization and the environment. They play an increasingly important role in the process of developing innovative small and medium enterprises. They are significantly involved in the cooperation with many entities in the environment. The environment is a buffer for enterprises to acquire the necessary resources. The need of their supplement is the result of the resources lack and opportunities created in this area. It is noteworthy that between the use of internal and external resources and innovative development there are a number of dependencies, among others — concerning the impact of their particular types on the discussed development. For this purpose, several important hypotheses have been verified in this article. The article was based on research project titled “The concept of ‘open innovation’ in small and medium-sized enterprises — models, trends and determinants of development” financed by the National Center for Science granted under decision No. DEC-2012/07 / B / HS4 / 03085. The purpose of this article is to present own research on resources and their role in the development of innovative SMEs in Poland, taking into account the importance of open innovation.
