Summary/Abstract: Innovation is a key factor for improving of the competitiveness among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) according to the knowledge-based economy (KBE), in which the EU has become more competitive region in the world (by raising their innovation). The novelty level ofSME depends on many factors – the most important is innovative capability to innovate. Regarding to smallerscale enterprises (SMEs) creating of its capability is extremely important from the point of view of their innovative development. However, research shows that the main activities of these companies are focused on improving the external capability (absorption and assimilation) than internal (in terms of their potential), so there is no possibility of independent development of these enterprises in the long term. The purpose of this short paper is to analyze the capacity for innovation among SMEs in Poland, taking into account their level of differentiation in depending on the size and age and their level of innovativeness. This study verifies the importance of the innovation capacity of SMEs in the process of raising its market competitiveness.
