Summary/Abstract: Addition is first and basic mathematics operation, appears in two forms: oral and written addition of natural numbers. Oral and written addition have many similarities and differences, and it is very important to pay attention how to interpretate both of them to the students, respecting all methodical principles in initial teaching of mathematics, from the first to fourth grade of elementary school. The main teaching tool used by students and teachers is textbook, so the focus is on the scope of using oral and written summation in initial teaching of mathematics. The research was conducted through the analysis of textbooks used in initial mathematics teaching, approved by Ministry of Education and Science in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in 2017/2018. school year, using the evidence/ check list for verification. The final results of the research have shown that textbooks authors from the first to the third grade in elementary school, use mostly oral summation, while only in the fourth grade, authors introduces a written form.
