Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to the contributions of Petar Dinekov (1910-1992), a leading literary historian and folklorist in Bulgaria and the founding director (1973-1982) of the Institute of Folklore, and to the development of folkloristic. The article is based upon analysis of published texts; an important archive source (manuscript) is also used (Petar Dinekov’s diaries). The paper focuses on the conceptual development of the folklore studies in Bulgaria and the research interests of Dinekov in folklore in the context of his seminal legacy as a philologist and literary historian. It comprises short biographical notes; clarification of the Dinekov's interests in the field of folkloristics in the context of his larger contributions to philology; the crucial merits of Petar Dinekov to the institutional strengthening of folkloristics in Bulgaria (i.e., the foundation of the Institute of Folklore (1973). The theoretical concepts of Petar Dinekov on folklore as an oral art give ground to constructing the folkloristics as a discipline that is related to philology and is autonomous in regards to ethnography/ethnology. His contributions to folkloristics in Bulgaria surpass the indisputable significance of his research; an analysis of the various activities of Petar Dinekov as the leading scholar who contributed most decisively to the institutional and academic strengthening of the discipline in Bulgaria is presented.
