Summary/Abstract: The common good is a concept that is difficult to define. In contemporary literature,it is often put against the individual good. This approach deviates from the classic ideological tradition based on European culture. In the article I present the ancient roots of this issue, when the combination of the good of an individual and the good of the public was perceived as evidence of the intelligent nature of men and their ability of transforming the political community into an ethical community. This approach is also typical for the Christian thought, which enriched the idea of the common good with the value of universal love, including the love of the enemies, forgiveness, reconciliation, and most importantly the concept of the human person with the dignity assigned to him. The primacy of a human being as a person is also a determinant of seeking of a more just social order. In this perspective, the common good requires mutual recognition as persons, which excludes the instrumental treatment of individuals, social, ethnic or national groups.
