Some psychological features and attitudes in association with smoking abstention in adolescents

Summary/Abstract: This paper analyses simultaneously the association between smoking and different psychosocial attitudes and psychological features. We found that heavy smoking adolescents are less likely to pursue high academic achieve¬ments and more likely to be emotional extravert, and effective in intimate relations. Smokers and no-smokers seem to need different kind of social aims and use different kind of behavior regulations. In conclusion we suggest a hypothesis that smoking is a tool of a specific kind of strategy of living that does not value social goals but personal considerations, interpersonal relations and sexuality and we discuss the related changes in preventive strategies.
