Summary/Abstract: The aim of the text is to present the view of Professor Maria Dudzikowa the phenomenon of authority. The Professor referred to the issue of the authority many times in her works and journal interviews. She perceived the need to bring up this problem, pointing out the difficulties with regard to defining the notion of authority, as well as lack of discussion on this topic in the Polish academic pedagogy journal. At the same time, she was deeply convinced that there was a great demand for the actual, hands-on authority in society, especially in the students’ community. The actual authorities should be differentiated from pseudo authorities. According to M. Dudzikowa, it is crucial to finally dispel the myth of employing teachers with external authorities and making all teachers realise the need for becoming an emancipating authority. This article explores the definition difficulties associated with the concept of authority, the myths around this term, extreme positions on the legitimacy of authority in education, and the conditions that the teacher must fulfill in order to become a real authority.
