Seismic source parameters – seismic intensity and magnitude

Summary/Abstract: The monitoring of global seismicity by international agencies has the purpose to rapidly and accurately estimate theseismic source parameters, especially for major earthquakes. In the case of weaker seismic events, because of the regional impact and relative localization of the seismic networks (of each agency) the estimation of these parameters is different and more difficult. This paper presents two parameters of the seismic source, the macroseismic intensity and magnitude, parameters of interest for general public, with reference to the earthquake epicenter, depth and time of its occurrence. These parameters characterize the size of the earthquake, depending on the observed damages and release of the seismic energy.
