Summary/Abstract: The work of the seismologist is laborious but interesting and involves, among others, complex and detailed assessments of seismic sources, so useful to specialists in various fields of geosciences, engineering and more. Seismic waves emerging from an earthquake transmit its energy in the form of vibrations, which travel through the interior of the globe to the surface. The basic processing task of seismology is to determine the arrival times of seismic phases. Phase reading provides basic information to improve the earth structure model, but also about the characteristics of a seismic event. The details of the earthquake characteristics, namely the seismic parameters, determine the location, magnitude and depth of the earthquakes, give solution of the focal mechanisms and thus estimate the level of stress for a certain region, the local or regional tectonics being observed. No doubt, that phase reading is done more or less automatically, especially for the first phases, but only the trained eye of the specialist can accurately discern the seismic parameters that describe an earthquake. Some basic notions about seismic waves, their phases, recommendations for phase readings and how to determine the essential seismic parameters are interesting notions not only for specialists, but also for the general public.
