Summary/Abstract: In 1859, the Jewish community of Galați, with the help of several international societies, such as the „Jewish Colonization Association”, founded the first primary boys’ school. It would be known as „B. Gottesmann” Boys’ Primary School, No.1. Since the educational needs kept increasing, in 1894, a second school was founded. The study analyses under which conditions the two educational institutes were founded, their relations with the Romanian authorities and with other Jewish institutions. It also highlights the permanent efforts to raise new edifices for these schools, to increase the number of classes, to expand the staff and the school curriculum. At the same time, the Romanian authorities also offered full recognition and support to these schools.
