Summary/Abstract: There are, in the type of pragmatic analysis applied to conversational structures, two architectural principles that have largely influenced this perspective on the functioning of language: the principle of cooperation and the principle of politeness, both having as starting point the assumption of rationality underlying the everyday discursive practices. Under these conditions, the agonal valences inherent in each new update of the language faculty have been obsessed with perseverance, which are always shipped in the background when it comes to principles that govern the dynamics of speech acts. In the book above we tried to question this approach to verbal interactions, by including in our case of two concepts that have finally made the central pylons to highlight the importance of “agonal” for the understanding and also for the description of verbal interactions everyday conversation as a ritual, and at the same time, as a strategy. This interpretive effort has relied on our conviction that the verbal interaction presupposes, like any other social activities, an ongoing negotiation of the statute of the actors involved in the mechanism of daily rituals, which is being built on an agonal foundation by excellence, that form made of the many strategies that involve speakers to achieve their goals.
