Summary/Abstract: In this paper, the author critically analyses theoretical attempts to understand the notion of democracy as 'a single meaning' notion. The analysis of the notion democracy shows that there are eight theories of democracy which defer in respect to cognitive, value, and practical characteristics. These are liberal, elitist, participative, representative, majority, consensual, institutional, and social theories of democracy. Besides differences in notions, democracies also defers in respect to institutional solutions. Thus, this paper also investigates different types of democratic states, democratic political systems, and democratic social institutions. In conclusion, the author claims that non-critical attitude towards globalization and democracy should be updated with differential thinking about democracy.
