Summary/Abstract: The friendship between Cioran and Țuțea is paradoxical due to the fact that it was constant during their lives, despite distances between them and Țuțea’s most trying destiny and the sheer impossibility of their communicating for rather long periods of time. Their friendship was one of the most constant in so far Cioran was concerned, owing not also to his infinite admiration of Țuțea’s genius, but also to the affinities that the texts being addressed demonstrate. The article aims at discussing critically the letters that the two Romanian intellectuals exchanged since early of age more or less frequently, as evinced by the two impressive texts that Țuțea wrote to his friend in the last years of his life. Research conducted in the archives of the former Romanian secret police resulted in the discovery of no less that eight letters written by Cioran in his early years, which he sent to Țuțea either from Sibiu (before leaving for France), or from Paris. The letters were written between 1936 and 1941 and follow the general lines of their correspondence in their volcanic and restless youth. In his letters, Cioran pledges his most sincere friendship and admiration while also approaching diverse themes, which include Romania’s and France’s political situation, his first years of life in his adoption country, as well as Țuțea ’s philosophical and poli¬ti¬cal stands. Everything is related in an excessive, hyperbolical tone, specific of young men. Concerning Țuțea’s opinion on Cioran, two of the letters he sent to Cioran in 1990 (after the Romanian revolution) stand as proof of the pressure of journalists. He also wrote a declaration in this sense about his old friend who became famous, declaration lately published in Romania liberă on the 10th of June 1990.
