Summary/Abstract: The aim of the research is to discuss and assess the current situation and perspectives for renewable energetics development in member states of the European Union. The data used for the research was provided by EUROSTAT. The time range covers the years2005–2016 and 2017–2020 (prediction). The prediction for years 2017–2020 was estimatedby taking into account chain indexes (2005–2016). The simple moving average was used(extreme values of observations were rejected for each state). Basing on estimated chainindexes the share of renewable energy in total energy consumption in EU countries was determined for years 2017–2020. The EU systematically increases the share of renewableenergy in total energy consumption. However, not all countries will achieve the 2020 target. It should be assumed that the European Union will maintain the growth rate of renewable energy share in energy consumption. Countries that will not reach future targets will increasingly use the possibilities of statistical transfers.
