Summary/Abstract: The introduction of dual VET in the Romanian education system starting with 2017 was thought out as a measure to counteract the shortage of skilled labour, to revive VET and to promote it as an attractive schooling choice to its prospective beneficiaries. This study is the result of a research carried out in a dual VET class in a technical school in Cluj-Napoca and concentrates on the students’ perception and degree of satisfaction regarding the course of study of their choice, as well as their career plans upon graduation. It also investigates the extent to which dual VET as schooling option stems from a genuine understanding of its potential by dual VET students or whether dual VET is a circumstantial choice. The findings show that dual VET as choice of study is commanded by parents, by proximity to home of the technical school and by lack of other schooling options due to poor school results. In other words, dual VET is a circumstantial choice. This leads to the conclusion that students fail to understand the potential of dual VET in securing them a job upon graduation.
