Summary/Abstract: The present paper addresses a question of much concern to our contemporary generation of learners highly influenced by the overwhelming developments in technology. Will they be able to acquire language knowledge through ICT and use it to become autonomous for a lifelong learning process? Or does traditional based schooling need to lay the foundations for such learning independence to exist? Whether ICT can function independently in students` acquisition of knowledge and skills will still need to pass the test of time. As for now, it has proven successful in developing learners` abilities to access various types of information and in building opportunities for discussion and getting feedback that could stimulate learner autonomy. Nevertheless, we dare say that new technologies need to be complemented by a degree of practical responsibility or intrinsic motivation either age-related or guided by more knowledgeable others in order to develop reflective, procedural and critical skills that will encourage students active engagement and commitment to language learning
